A whole-house retrofit combining thermal modelling and tailored fabric upgrades to improve energy performance while responding to the constraints of an existing dwelling.

A whole-house retrofit strategy designed to improve the energy performance of an existing dwelling through coordinated upgrades to its walls, roof and floors. Thermal modelling using the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) informed insulation levels, construction build-ups and performance targets.

Several wall strategies were developed to suit the property’s varied construction, façade treatments and practical constraints. These combine internal and external insulation, woodfibre materials, lime finishes and timber cladding, with each approach tailored to its location within the building.

Detailed design focused on insulation continuity and reducing thermal bridging at junctions. The resulting strategy balances energy performance with the existing fabric, providing a coordinated basis for the dwelling’s thermal upgrade.
