A compact, low-energy family home on a secluded Bristol backland site.

A proposed three-bedroom family home on a secluded backland site in Bristol, replacing seven garages with a compact, low-energy dwelling. The two-storey design reduces the building footprint, creating space for front and rear gardens while remaining below the height of surrounding houses.

Privacy shapes the arrangement of rooms and windows. Projecting, angled bedroom windows direct views away from neighbouring properties, while ground-floor living spaces connect to the gardens and a sheltered rear patio. Timber cladding, white render and clay roof tiles complement the residential setting.

A fabric-first environmental strategy combines high levels of insulation, airtightness and mechanical ventilation with carefully positioned glazing. Roof-mounted photovoltaic panels and a proposed heat pump support the home’s low-energy ambitions, while replacing concrete hardstanding with planted gardens creates opportunities for biodiversity.
